Operation Bubba Transport!

Image
Erik signed up with Pilots ‘n Paws. Back in August, we offered to fly a sweet older bulldog, Bubba, 1/2 way from Long Beach to a rescue group in Idaho that is going to make sure he gets an amazing furever home. As an added bonus, it’s not far from the dropoff point in Lovelock, NV to Tonopah, NV - which has a haunted hotel + cool mining history. So we made a weekend of it! Getting ready to load up Bubba! 💕 Heading out of the LA area. Wearing an oxygen mask to keep our blood oxygen level up and stave off hypoxia. Lake Tahoe! Dropping off Bubba for the next leg of his trip: Sightseeing in Tonopah, including the Mining Museum, the old cemetery, the brewpub, and a ghost tour at the Mizpah Hotel!

Gliders & Lunch in Jean, NV!

Glider Flying & Greek Feast in Jean, NV! When a dear friend you haven't seen in for-e-ver and a day (thanks, Covid!👍) invites you to have an outdoor, socially-distanced Greek feast, you don't hesitate, you just go! In this case, lunch took place at a picnic table next to the runway in Jean, NV (0L7) while glider operations and sky diving were going on all around us. As another pilot said while landing, it was a regular ol' party at the airport, despite being essentially in the middle of nowhere. The flight there was absolutely gorgeous in unseasonably warm winter weather. I always love flying through the desert. The landscape holds so much mystique and such a quiet, understated beauty. I'm fascinated by folks who live out there, too - I find myself wondering whether I could live a life of such simplicity and solitude... Something about the wide open space makes my mind wander... Could living "off-grid" increase my creativity? What is the geological and e...

Brackett Airfield - great local hiking!

Image
Brackett Airfield + Local Hiking! Yesterday, Piper and Erik wanted a local spot to take some awesome wildlife / landscape photos. Brackett Field (KPOC) in La Verne is just a hop, skip + a jump from KLGB (and honestly not that far from anywhere in LA). The best part is that there is a beautiful hiking trail (and RV camping area) right next to the airport called Bonelli Park Trail (https://goo.gl/maps/u63FprsY5ZqncY7E8). And, in normal times, there's a great little restaurant, Norm's Hangar Coffee Shop (https://goo.gl/maps/yKceaR1coLewprYy8) , plus a lake just up the way. I believe there is also a playground. It was a gorgeous day with snow in the mountains, warm sun, and beautiful cloud formations (not always the best for flying, but not a problem on this day). They walked just a little ways on the hiking trail and were able to get some great shots (to be added later). Coming home around 4:30pm offered a spectacular view of the sunset out over the ocean and Catalina (turning b...

Now that's what I call a hiatus / Flying at dusk!

Image
Now that's what I call a hiatus! 😎 It's been...a minute since I updated this blog, but there has been no shortage of flying and adventures during that time and I hope to post lots of old fun pics and stories here soon (especially since Covid has us mostly home-bound for the foreseeable future). For now, I want to tell you about my favorite time of day to fly - dusk ! It is so peaceful and beautiful, it feels surreal and enchanted. I love the sunset, clouds coming in over the ocean, twinkling lights, all of it. I also don't get motion sick like I sometimes do during the day. 😉 *** The occasion for this Boxing Day flight was that we tried to go to the restaurant, French Valley Cafe  ( https://menupages.com/french-valley-cafe/37600-sky-canyon-dr-murrieta) to get some food to go , at French Valley airport (F70) in Temecula/Murrieta . The flight from Long Beach to French Valley is short (~20 mins) but GORGEOUS when you fly directly over Saddleback Mountain and the Cleveland ...
